NHS Health Checks are free checks for 40-74 year olds that take 20-30 minutes to complete. The check will assess your risk of developing serious conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, stroke, and vascular dementia.
Even if you’re feeling well, it’s worth having your NHS Health Check now. We can then work with you to lower your chances of developing these health problems in the future.
If you're in the 40-74 age group without a pre-existing condition, you can expect to receive a letter from your GP or local authority inviting you for a free NHS Health Check every five years.
What happens at the check?
- You’ll be asked some simple questions and your height, weight, age, sex and ethnicity will be recorded.
- Your doctor will take your blood pressure and pulse and also do a simple blood test to check your cholesterol level.
- You will be taken through your results and given advice and support to help you reduce your risk and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Health Checks are being offered to people aged between 40 and 74 who do not already have; Diabetes, Coronary Heart Disease or previous heart attacks, Stroke or mini strokes, Chronic kidney disease, Peripheral arterial disease and Atrial Fibrillation (AF), High blood pressure or High cholesterol, and have not had an NHS health check in the last 5 years.
